Jim,

Consider your offer accepted. In fact, if you'd like to head up the new editorial committee, I think your credentials are a great fit.

We'll need your first 10 articles by the end of March however, as we're now working on a schedule that compiles 3 magazines at once, "piggy-backed" for rapid publication....

Seriously, I thought I had replied to the messages you sent me with an acknowledgement, a thank you, and acceptance but, there are a lot of things going on right now, and it's going to take even the most Herculean of us a bit of time to sort it all out.

Stay tuned everybody, there's....... Well, just stay tuned!
So, I really don't think that just going off blindly and doing something is the best choice for me or ASIA. If everyone did that, we could end up with 18 people doing the same thing and no one doing 12 other thing that need to be done.
That is a valid point, and you might be right. However, since so few people are contributing I think the chances of this happening are slim....
I understand your point...I just don't agree with it.
Fair enough. I too understand your point. I think this is a difference in life philosophy and I am ok with "agreeing to disagree".    bpoling38408.0274421296

There's also the aspect of taking up other people's time for articles that may or may not be published. When I write for magazine, I never schedule an interview or write a word on spec. I always wait for assignments. In fact, many business people, politicians and celebrities will not agree to an interview unless the writer has a firm assignment.

I realize that most luthiers are not going to act that way, but is it fair for me to ask them to take time away from their work if I don't have a reasonable expectation that the article is even desired?

Jim
Let me describe my experiance with writing for ASIA. I had an idea for an article and I sent an email to the editor describing what I wanted to write. I asked if he would be interrested. He replied that I should go ahead with it. I wrote the article and sent it to him. He wrote back and asked me to flush out a few things and send some Photos. I did that. I received a mail a few months later asking for the photos again. I replied sent them. My article appeared in the next issue.

All in all it was pretty painless. A simple email exchange was all that was necessary to get the "assignment" and I went with it. My only concern was that my writing wouldn't be good enough and the editor would have to reject the article. I had no concerns that the article wouldn't fit into the theme of the issue. If that happened, it would probably fit into a subsequent issue.

In short, the assignment process seems to be:
author: Here's an idea. Interrested?
editor: Sure, go ahead. or No, too off topic. Try a gardening magazine.
